LIVE: While She Sleeps – The Underworld, London

While She Sleeps are a band that we’ve seen live on many occasions. Whether it’s big festivals, a sold out headline show at Brixton Academy and even a tiny no barrier show in our home city of Oxford, they always put on a fantastic show and with a visit to the Underworld in Camden, we expected something quite similar to the chaos of Oxford’s Bullingdon.

You can read about some of my favourite While She Sleeps shows here:

Better Days With… While She Sleeps

I finished work and hopped straight in the car to head down to London in time to fuel up on some Camden Town Street food before meandering over to the world’s end pub to queue up just in time for doors. It was as we entered said doors that I was reminded what a cool venue the Underworld is. The bar area gave us the opportunity to bump into some familiar faces from past gigs before venturing into the main room when once we were prepared.

Loathe kicked off the evening with an intense, floor shaking set which warmed everyone up very nicely! Their on stage production included TV’s showing video footage as they played which was a very nice touch. It felt like many in the appreciative crowd were experiencing Loathe for the first time but, judging by the reaction, it won’t be the last.

Sleeps started their set with incredibly high intensity as the trio of ‘Sleeps Society’, ‘Anti-Social’ and ‘Brainwashed’ ensured there wasn’t a single pair of feet standing still.

It was nice that the set started with 3 songs from 3 different albums rather than being too focused on new material. 4 albums were represented across the setlist which revisited some fan favourites such as ‘Four Walls’ as well as new ones like ‘Nervous’.

There’s always been a community feeling around WSS and that theme was referenced a couple of times during the set as well as being proven in the pit. I often found myself boosting up crowdsurfers, picking people up from the floor and shouting lyrics with strangers around me. This was one of the most passionate and friendliest crowds I had ever been a part of.

Another theme tonight was sweat! This was easily the sweatiest show I had ever been to which was obviously fueled by the incredible energy in the room from band members and fans alike. There wasn’t a moment of respite from some form of jumping, stage-diving or bubbling mosh pit apart from perhaps during the singalong of ‘Nervous’ towards the end of the night.

Aside from the chaos that comes with a band like While She Sleeps playing a small room like the Underworld, this night felt like a night to celebrate the unity and community created not just by Sleeps and their fans but by the alternative scene as a whole. For many, this would have been their first gig since lockdown started and they really showed how much live music is loved, how much it was missed and how much it is needed.

Heavy Music Awards 2021

We were lucky enough to attend the Heavy Music Awards at O2 Forum, Kentish Town. It’s the first time we’ve been to an awards show like this so we were very excited for the experience. Here’s how it went down.

Hot Milk

We arrived a little late so unfortunately missed As Everything Unfolds and only caught the end of Hot Milk’s set but what we saw in the two songs we managed to see was a high energy band having great fun and interacting brilliantly with the crowd. At one point they had everyone crouched before springing up and jumping at the command of vocalists Han and Jim. Han’s voice did sound a little shaky at times but it’s an awards performance and she was probably just enjoying herself.

Awards: Part 1

Next up was the first wave of awards hosted by Alex Baker and a number of guests announcers. The winners were:

Best Video: Nova Twins – Taxi

Best Production: Rou Reynolds – Enter Shikari

Best UK Band: Bring Me The Horizon

Best Album Artwork: Dance Gavin Dance – Afterburner

Best International Band – Ghostmane

Trash Boat

Trash Boat were next with a showstopping performance… literally! They brought out Wargasm’s Milkie Way for her feature on the song ‘Bad Entertainment’. The outfit she wore was more revealing than Twitch liked and they subsequently took the livestream down and banned the channel. All this happened despite Trash Boat vocalist Tobi having his nipples on display for the full set up until that point. As expected, the set was made up almost entirely of songs from latest album ‘Don’t You Feel Amazing’ which sounded awesome live. Tobi gave a short speech about feeling yourself and the freedom of living your life however you want before closing with ‘He’s So Good’ which triggered a great reaction from the crowd both in the form of mosh pits and singalongs.

Awards: Part 2

Trash Boat were followed by the second half of the awards show. The winners were:

The H Award: Music Venue Trust – For exceptional contribution to the heavy music scene

Best Podcast: The Downbeat (Craig Reynolds)

Best International Breakthrough Band: Spiritbox

Best UK Breakthrough Band: Wargasm

Best Album: Bring Me The Horizon – Post Human: Survival Horror

Sleep Token

Closing out the show was the mighty Sleep Token. A long, suspenseful intro bled into ‘The Night Does Not Belong To God’ and then ‘The Offering’, the opening tracks from their album ‘Sundowning’. Sleep Token’s range is immediately showcased by the difference between soft vocal melodies and brutal heavy guitar breakdowns within the first 2 songs. ‘Alkaline’, the first single from the upcoming album, really got the crowd going with some people in the pit, some up on friend’s shoulders and others just stood captivated by what they were witnessing. ‘The Love You Want’ got it’s live debut before the 7 song set was closed out with the physical heaviness of ‘Higher’ and the emotional heaviness of ‘Blood Sport’.

Sleep Token absolutely stole the show this evening with an absolutely mesmerising set. Vessel’s vocals sound almost as perfect live as they do on record and we even got a bit of a scream and a ‘BLEGH’ at the end of ‘Higher’.

I was very grateful to get the opportunity to attend the awards, it was a great experience and the bands that played were fantastic. You can see footage of the bands that played and those that won awards on the Ragamuffin YouTube channel.

Slam Dunk Preview

Even with Slam Dunk suffering from so many bands having to pull out, the lineup is still absolutely stacked and still has plenty of clashes! With so many class bands on the lineup, I thought it would be easiest to check out the clash finder and talk about how my day shapes up.

(Set times are for Slam Dunk South and are subject to change).

Blood Youth

11:40 – 12:10 – JägermeisterTent

As opening acts go, Blood Youth isn’t exactly a gentle way to warm up. Their recent new releases sound brutally dark and heavy and they will do a great job of waking us up for the afternoon ahead.

Roam

12:20 – 12:50 – Rock Scene Stage

Roam are a great festival band! Expect a set filled with fun hooks, catchy pop-punk choruses and perhaps some acrobatics.

Weatherstate

14:25 – 14:55 – The Key Club Stage (Left)

Weatherstate are a very welcome late edition to the lineup I loved their 2019 album ‘Born a Cynic’ so I’m looking forward to hearing some of it live.

Your Demise

15:40 – 16:20 -Jägermeister Tent

2021, bitch! I loved this band as a teenager but never had the opportunity of seeing them live. Well, now is my chance. This could well be a one off so I will be making the most of this for sure!

Trash Boat

16:20 – 17:00 – Jägermeister Tent

Trash Boat are always brilliant live and they’ve got a brand new album out so that means new songs to play live. I am also keeping an eye on that secret set on the key club stage but it will need to be something special to drag me away from Trash Boat.

State Champs

16:25 – 19:10 – Rock Scene Stage

I’ve seen them quite a few times now and State Champs never disappoint! If I’m going to lose my voice to any band today, it will probably be them.

Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls

19:35 – 20:25 – Punk in Drublic Stage

My one and only planned visit to the Punk In Drublic stage will be for Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls because how can I resist an early afternoon folk-punk singalong?

While She Sleeps

20:00 – 21:00 – Jägermeister Stage

I will have to leave Frank’s set early to catch While She Sleeps. They’re one of my personal favourite bands and they’ve released a new album this year which has reportedly sounded phenomenal live. Surely unmissable?

Boston Manor

20:20 – 20:55 – The Key Club Stage (Left)

After having my plan for the day set, Slam Dunk surprised us with the addition of Boston Manor to close out the Key Club stages. I’m not saying I will definately be seeing them but it’s going to be hard to resist and I may have to miss some of While She Sleeps. Decisions, decisions!

Don Broco

20:50 – 22:00 – Rock Scene Stage

There’s no decision to be made here, Don Broco will be my headliners. Always outstanding live and with new songs to add to their set, this could end up being one to remember.

It says a lot about the strength of the lineup that Slam Dunk have assembled, despite difficult circumstances, when there are still so many bands that I will miss out on due to clashes. Leaving Vukovi, Holding Absence, Wargasm, Static Dress and others out of my schedule has not been an easy decision to make at all!
